Mathematics

The study of mathematics is important for many reasons, including the development of higher level thinking skills, and the preparation of students for careers in math, business, science and fields related to technology. There is a four-year mathematics graduation requirement at Mercy. All students take a diagnostic test on basic skills prior to entering high school.

Students begin course progression at Mercy High School consistent with their math proficiency as determined by qualifying tests as well as prior experiences. Examples of sequences include:

  1. Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry and either Finite Math, Math of Finance, Trigonometry and Advanced Topics, Pre-Calculus (H), or Statistics.
  2. Algebra II (H), Geometry (H), Pre-Calculus(H), Calculus (H/AP) or Statistics.
  3. Geometry (H), Pre-Calculus (H), Calculus (H/AP), Advanced Calculus (H/AP).

The department places students individually in appropriate courses each year.
