Religion

Freshman religion focuses on the physical, intellectual, emotional and spiritual development of the adolescent. Additionally, the Hebrew Scriptures are reviewed and Jesus and His message are introduced. Sophomore religion introduces two topics: a study of Christian morality and an overview of the Christian Testament. Within both freshman and sophomore religion, Music for Worship provides a study of the rudiments of music within a context of learning music for worship.

In the junior year, two semester courses provide Church History and Social Responsibility, within which a requirement of 50 hours of social service is placed. Students choose the service organization with which they work, contributing thousands of collective hours that benefit church and community. Seniors are required to elect at least one semester of senior religion. Electives include: Conversations in Theology and Faith, Images of Christ in the Arts, Images of Mary, Introduction to Bioethics, Life Choices for Christian Women, and Understanding Islam.

Mercy's Religion Department oversees the liturgical life of the school by planning for Masses and prayer services throughout the year. Prayer Days for all year levels and a senior closed retreat are arranged through the Department.
