For those with a penchant for the visual arts, Mercy offers opportunities that range from foundational instruction to advanced study in which a student works to prepare a competitive portfolio. Elective course offerings of the Art Department are presented in a setting that permits individualized instruction. Students are given the opportunity to exhibit their works in different areas of the school, and occasionally in public galleries.
Gerardo Gómez-Moreno, chair of the Art Department, completed his studies in Madrid, Spain where he specialized in mural painting and fresco. Many of his creations appear in public buildings and places of worship. His works are displayed in Spain, France, Ecuador, Puerto Rico and the Baltimore area.
Mercy High School is also home to a chapter of the National Art Honor Society. Mercy art students have gone on to successful careers in all facets of the visual arts.
