Tess Veloso ’68

The Spirit of Mercy Alumna Service Award
Tess Veloso ’68 is a servant leader who has inspired her classmates and the larger Mercy High School community to champion their alma mater. After earning her B.A. in sociology from the University of Maryland, College Park, Tess worked as a social worker for the Baltimore City Department of Social Services until 1979. She later pursued a career in business for a decade and earned her M.B.A. from the University of Baltimore.

Tess later pivoted to serve as a project manager with TAA Foundation where she worked to eliminate healthcare disparities for minority populations in partnership with the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. While working for the foundation, she returned to the Philippines as part of a medical mission team. Along with her professional career, Tess has also volunteered for the Hopewell Cancer Support Center, Foundation for Aid to the Philippines, Katipunan Filipino Society of Maryland, and as founding member, secretary, and chair of the Board of Directors of First Act, Inc.

Tess’ dedicated leadership as a Mercy trustee and later as the director of communications was critical to the growth of Mercy’s profile in the larger community. In her communications role, Tess launched a new web presence for the school and led a brand refresh to develop a graphic identity still used today. Tess served on the steering committee for Mercy Moving Forward, a strategic initiative that culminated in Mercy’s decision to pursue the International Baccalaureate Program and to construct the Sisters of Mercy Athletic Complex. She also chaired the search committee that appointed Dr. Kathryn Adelsberger as Mercy’s principal in 2021.
