The Mercy High School community mourns the loss of Bruce T. Votta P’10, a longtime Mercy High School trustee and volunteer, philanthropist, and friend of the Sisters of Mercy.
Bruce lost his brave battle with cancer on Monday, August 19 at Stella Maris. He was 71 years old.
A tireless business and civic leader, Bruce joined his wife, Mary Agnes Myers Votta ’68, P’10, a longtime volunteer in the Alumnae Office and the recipient of our 2020 Spirit of Mercy Alumna Service Award, in loyal service and deep dedication to Mercy High School. Bruce's leadership of the Mercy Fathers’ Club and its John L. Stasiak Memorial Golf Outing, as well as the Facilities Committee of the Mercy Board of Trustees, sparked the renewal of our 26-acre campus. Through his efforts, Mercy received more than $3.5 million in gifts for essential campus facility improvements. The Vottas’ dedication to Mercy continues in the next generation with their daughter, Jessica Votta Stehman PA-C ’10, and son Jonathan, an active supporter of the Fathers’ Club.
Bruce was a founding partner and principal of Spears/Votta & Associates (SVA), a leading consulting engineering firm. SVA and its successor firm BALA | SVA designed many projects on Mercy’s campus, including our John L. Stasiak Boiler Room, modern restrooms, and heating, ventilation, & air conditioning systems throughout our main campus building. Bruce's near-limitless energy and drive benefitted the Engineering Society of Baltimore, the Building Congress & Exchange and its foundation, the Community College of Baltimore County Foundation, Fifth District and Prettyboy elementary schools, and Our Lady of Grace Parish in Parkton, among others.
As a sign of deep gratitude and affection, Mercy’s dining hall—a center of student and community life and the home of the Mercy Mothers’ and Fathers’ clubs—will be named in honor of Bruce and Mary Agnes Myers Votta ’68, P’10 for all they have done together for Mercy High School.

Eternal rest grant unto Bruce, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the Mercy of God, rest in peace.
