Dr. Gwen Lee ’86
Spirit of Mercy Alumna Service Award
Dr. Gwen Lee ’86 is an internist in Virginia, primarily working at Western State Hospital. She graduated with her bachelor’s degree in biochemistry from Trinity College in 1990 and earned her doctorate degree in the internal medicine specialty from the University of Maryland’s School of Medicine in 1995.
A former student of Ms. Rose Clugh, former chemistry teacher and department chair at Mercy, Gwen assisted Rose through a cancer diagnosis and treatment in 2017. Gwen credits Rose with being one of her major positive influences and motivating factors in her life journey to becoming a doctor.
Through this two-and-a-half-year battle, Gwen routinely came to Baltimore from Staunton, VA to lend her professional expertise, personal support, and prayers. She spent an entire week with Rose, interpreting doctors, shopping for groceries, and helping Rose recover from surgeries. She did all of this while helping to care for her own mother who was dying.
Gwen again returned to Maryland in 2022 to care for Rose through hip replacement surgery and recovery. In both instances, Gwen knew the questions to ask and helped explain the doctor's insights. Her professional expertise was invaluable to the Clughs, but her true gift was her presence and her prayers. Mr. Clugh notes, “We love Gwen like a daughter. She is a true angel on earth. She first came into our lives as a student of Rose’s at Mercy, but we believe she was sent to us for this specific purpose.”
While a student, Gwen was a member of The Shield and submitted work to a publication called Reflections, which was a collection of student writings from the 1985-86 school year.
