The Law and Social Action Program

The Law and Social Action Program

The Law and Social Action Program provides Mercy Girls with opportunities to evaluate how interdependence, as well as political, legal, social, and economic change affect all communities, with a focus on globalization and sustainable development. This three or four-year program facilitates a study of social change through governance, social and legal policy, and justice, allowing Mercy Girls to understand individual and systemic power. Students in this program are encouraged to engage in innovative, responsible action.

This program is open to qualified ninth and tenth graders. Mercy Girls enrolled in this program focus on the Critical Concerns of the Sisters of Mercy as they explore law and public policy.

While taking part in the Law and Social Action Program, Mercy Girls gain invaluable experience as they:

  • Attend symposia that focus on the Critical Concerns of the Sisters of Mercy. The first year is dedicated to a deep-dive into each of the Critical Concerns facilitated by Br. Ryan Roberts who serves on the Institute Justice Team at the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas.
  • Participate in field trips and guest speaker events.
  • Become active members of extracurricular clubs and organizations related to the program’s curriculum, eventually serving in a leadership role
  • Enroll in courses that complement the program during junior or senior year including History of Baltimore (required), Law and Society (required), Global Issues, or another world language
