In Memoriam: Sister Agnese Neumann, RSM +

Communications Office
The Mercy High School community mourns the loss of founding faculty member, Sister Agnese Neumann, RSM +.
It is with deep sadness that we share with you that Sister Agnese Neumann, RSM, a beloved member of our founding faculty, died on August 2, 2025 at Mercy Medical Center after a long illness. She was 96 years old.

Born and raised in Baltimore, Sister Agnese entered the Sisters of Mercy after graduating from Mount St. Agnes High School in 1947. She taught at various elementary and secondary schools staffed by the Sisters of Mercy before she was assigned to serve on our inaugural faculty. On the Mercy faculty from 1960 to 1967, Sister Agnese taught Latin, English, religion, and science. She left Mercy in 1967 for another assignment, returning in 1969 to serve as a biology teacher and science department chair.

In 1973, Sister Agnese left Mercy High School to pursue a career in nursing, eventually becoming a nurse practitioner. During her nursing career, Sister Agnese co-founded a clinic for women in need and frequently volunteered to care for those in hospice. In celebration of Sister Agnese’s exceptional career in healthcare, Mercy High School established the Sister Agnese Neumann Scholars Program in partnership with MedStar Good Samaritan Hospital in 2018. Through this program, Mercy Girls have received hands-on training in a specialized healthcare setting.

Although her teaching career ended many years ago, Sister Agnese continued to mentor Mercy Girls through this unique program—listening to their experiences through their internships and providing valuable advice to our juniors and seniors as they considered paths of study and specialties. She also volunteered in our Alumnae Office for many years, and she will be missed by generations of Mercy alumnae.

In recognition of Sister Agnese’s extraordinary impact as a faculty member and her steadfast belief in the power of a Mercy education, we have established the Sister Agnese Neumann, RSM Scholarship Fund. Gifts in Sister Agnese’s memory can be made here

We will be in touch regarding funeral arrangements as soon as they are available. In the meantime, we ask for special prayers for the Sisters of Mercy, Sister Agnese’s family, and Sister Susanne Ashton, RSM, who has been a dear friend to Sister Agnese for many years.

Eternal rest grant unto Sister Agnese, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her. May her soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
