Nancy Assero ’65, P’97has been an enthusiastic member of the Mercy High School community since her first day as a Mercy Girl. Following graduation in 1965, Nancy continued her Mercy education at Mount St. Agnes College, where she earned a B.S. in sociology and a minor in philosophy. After four years as an elementary school teacher in the Baltimore City Public Schools, Nancy joined the faculty of what was then known as Martin Spalding High School. In 1981, Nancy began a 36-year career with Kelly Services, where she managed relationships with high-profile organizations in the Baltimore area.
Several years ago, Nancy said, “When I came to Mercy, I was going to be what the world said I could be. When I graduated in 1965, I was confident I would be whatever I wanted to be.” She also envisioned the same for her own daughter, Meghan Murphy, a member of the Class of 1997.
Nancy has continued to live out Mercy values through her commitment to social justice. As a Woman of Mercy, Nancy has been a lifelong supporter of her parish community, St. Francis of Assisi, and has chaired their Annual Christmas Giving Basket Program which collects food, clothing, toys, and gift cards for those in need during the holiday season. An advocate for peace within Baltimore and beyond, Nancy has been a voice for those who have none by bringing attention to injustices suffered by others. She has a special passion for civil rights and social action, human rights, poverty alleviation, education, and the environment—causes that reflect the Critical Concerns of the Sisters of Mercy. Nancy continues to be actively involved with Mercy by attending events, supporting our Mercy Girls, and maintaining strong connections to the Sisters of Mercy.
