The Mentor Program

The Mentor Program

The Mentor Program allows Mercy Girls to explore an individually chosen field of interest beyond the traditional academic setting. This program pairs Mercy Girls with accomplished professionals who accept the student as a protégé while sharing knowledge and expertise on a one-to-one basis. Throughout the partnership, Mercy Girls investigate the outlook for the profession, its current challenges, and the pathway to achieve mastery.  
Mercy Girls apply to participate in the Mentor Program during their sophomore year by submitting an application that contains a proposal outlining their specific goals and plans for study. Students in this program conduct an independent study for one semester during junior year, with a minimum requirement of thirty hours each quarter. A final reflective paper and presentation marks the culmination of the course.

In the past, Mercy Girls have explored careers under the guidance of Baltimore Sun and Catholic Review journalists, Johns Hopkins researchers, criminal attorneys, physicians, writers, political leaders, and others.

  • What is evaluated in the application process?

    Mercy Girls must have:
    • A good academic record
    • Demonstrated evidence of personal maturity, responsibility, and initiative
    • Successfully completed the Interest Survey
    • Completed the supplemental application
    • Written a formal proposal that includes readings and interviews which demonstrate the student’s familiarity with the field of interest and sets goals for the program, including potential activities that might be accomplished throughout the year.
