In Memoriam: Michael J. Batza +

Communications Office
The Mercy High School community mourns the loss of Mr. Michael J. Batza, a dear friend of the Sisters of Mercy and Mercy High School.
Together with his wife Pattie, Mike championed many local nonprofit institutions including a number of Mercy ministries—Mercy High School, Mercy Medical Center, Mercy Ridge, and Marian House.

Here at Mercy High School, the Batzas made leadership commitments toward construction of the Sisters of Mercy Athletic Complex and our current capital campaign, The Spirit of Mercy: Advancing the Legacy of the Sisters of Mercy. Their generosity has propelled Mercy High School forward, providing exceptional opportunities and campus enhancements for our Mercy Girls. Staunch advocates for the education of girls, Mike and Pattie also supported tuition assistance, keeping a Mercy education accessible for our students.

Mike’s commitment to the Sisters of Mercy includes service as a trustee of both Mercy Medical Center and Mercy Ridge. He worked closely with Sister Helen Amos, RSM and other hospital leaders on an historic capital campaign, leading to the construction of The Mary Catherine Bunting Center. Most recently, Mike chaired the Mercy Forever 150th Anniversary campaign. Pattie’s dedication to the Sisters of Mercy has included serving on the advisory board of the Center for Women's Health and Medicine at Mercy Medical Center and the board of Marian House, where she collaborated closely with Sister Augusta Reilly, RSM. In recognition of their efforts, "The Baltimore Sun" named Mike and Pattie as Business and Civic Hall of Fame honorees in 2023.

A most gracious gentleman, Mike will be remembered for his visionary leadership, expansive generosity, and extraordinary commitment to the charism of the Sisters of Mercy. An ardent supporter of Mercy High School, he celebrated our continued forward momentum. We will miss him dearly. Please join us in prayer for Mike, his wife Pattie, and their family and friends. Final arrangements are pending.

Eternal rest grant unto Mike, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the Mercy of God, rest in peace.
